MINNEAPOLIS S BRIEFING

A man who fled after being indicted two years ago for operating a large methamphetamine lab in a trendy Minneapolis neighborhood was indicted Tuesday on additional federal charges that could add up to prison sentences in excess of 30 years.

John Michael Pierson, 29, was arrested in November 1999 after police discovered methamphetamine labs on two floors of the Calhoun Building at 711 W. Lake St. in the Uptown neighborhood. The six-story building is owned by a nonprofit arts agency and is mainly occupied by artists.

Police evacuated an entire block at the intersection of Lake and Lyndale avenues, including shops, restaurants and an apartment building, while volatile chemicals were being removed from the building. In addition to the chemicals, police found nearly 5 pounds of methamphetamine and $50,000 in cash.

In May 2000, Pierson was scheduled to plead guilty in front of U.S. District Judge Michael Davis after being indicted on separate counts of manufacturing and attempting to distribute the drug. He faced a maximum sentence of 22 years in prison. At the time, he was wearing an electronic ankle bracelet and was living at home. Davis issued a warrant for Pierson's arrest and he was arrested last May in New York City after being a fugitive for a year. Under federal drug laws, Pierson faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison on each of the drug charges.

Man indicted for allegedly failing to appear in court on meth charges

Wednesday, July 18, 2001

A man charged in 1999 with operating a methamphetamine laboratory in the Uptown area of Minneapolis was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury for failing to appear in court.

John M. Pierson, 29, of Minneapolis, was indicted in December 1999 on charges of possessing with intent to distribute about 4.4 pounds of methamphetamine and manufacturing the drug.

He failed to make a May 9, 2000, court appearance and was arrested May 10, 2001, in New York.

Authorities say Pierson operated the laboratory in the 700 block of W. Lake St., where authorities found the methamphetamine and about $50,000.

They also found six 16-ounce bottles of ether that experts said could have leveled a city block if they had exploded.

During the search, nearby apartments were evacuated and W. Lake Street was blocked off for a time.

Pierson was free on a $25,000 unsecured bond, which means he didn't have to put up cash but promised to pay if he failed to show up. He also was wearing an ankle monitor.

When he failed to appear in court, a federal warrant was issued for his arrest.

His trial in the initial case is set for Sept. 17. Sentencing guidelines call for about 17 to 22 years in prison if he is convicted.
